The Make a Child Smile Appeal

My name is Richard Barker. I created The Make A Child Smile Appeal in 2004. I was nineteen and I wanted to make a difference. I started with one signed copy of Sir Richard Branson's autobiography. I've managed to collect signed items from J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates and Rupert Murdoch. I've also raised over ten thousand pounds for the Children With AIDS Charity. I'm aiming to raise over one million!

I've used my networking skills to convert my simple idea into a brand. I think that there are a lot of synergies between doing business and fundraising. You have to be focused, determined and bloody minded!

I personally believe that innovation is priceless! I've recently launched the first music download site, which donates 100% of its profits to charity! I've also created a fashion line. I'm hoping to develop new products in the future. The possibilities are infinite!

We support children that have been infected and affected by HIV. I think that the kids are incredibly courageous! I've been inspired by their stories. I may not be able to cure them, but I hope that we've been able to make them smile! I've collected thousands of small gifts from the entertainment industry. They've been distributed in the UK, India and Romania.

I want to stop this disease from spreading. I've raised a lot of money for the Children With AIDS Charity's Education Department. We aim to reduce the stigma that still surrounds HIV. We also teach young people about sexually transmitted diseases.

I've recently become a Trustee of the Children With AIDS Charity.

I'm very passionate about my work! I hope that I'll get an opportunity to work with other organizations in the future. Giving can be far more rewarding than receiving. I really do hope that my story will show other young people that they have the ability to make a difference.
