Doctor Tech started trading in 2003 as a local computer repair centre based in Hove, East Sussex. A failing business which was taken over by a friend of mine who realised early on that he had taken on more than he bargained for. Due to a terrible reputation for service and a number of existing customers who were extremely unhappy with the service and products they had purchased from the previous owner. My background is set firmly in the customer service and solution based services sector and Steve thought this would be a great opportunity for me to prove my skills and turnaround a local business and make it something that the local community could rely on.

My brief from Steve:

‘Turn this business around in 12 months and I’ll make you a Director with a 50% stake’.

I was cruising in my current role and needed a new challenge. I agreed and joined the company in July 2005. I achieved the goal of turning the business around and all within eight months. Steve decided that the IT sector was not for him. I gained my 50% share and bought him out.

Doctor Tech IT Ltd is now all mine and this is where the fun really begins. I had noticed that our customers were all looking for a service that can take care of all their technology needs, not just computers. At this point I decided it was time to grow our portfolio of services to include business specific services and to extend the number of services and products to our retail customers.

How has the business changed since you took over?

When we started out on this journey the business focussed on providing a quality pc and laptop sales and associated services. Our days were pretty much the same each day. PC’s & Laptops would arrive, we would then diagnose the fault and repair for the customer.

Now each day offers all sorts of new and varied challenges. Due to this I have doubled our staffing level and have access to a portfolio of trusted and vetted trades people to help with the larger projects we take on. In any one day we could have people focussing on repairs, engineers on site looking after our business clients, AV engineers on site designing and installing whole house video and audio systems and then we could also be installing CCTV systems in homes or businesses. And with all this we still manage to run a retail store providing help and support to our retail customers. The staff also enjoy the chance to show off our Home cinema and multi room audio systems to anyone that wants to listen.

We also launched a new side to our business this year.

This is our website focussing on sales of high quality AV technology and furniture. To date we have received orders from all over the world and continue to receive positive feedback from all of our customers. They particularly like that they can ask us any technical question and they get a clear an concise answer in return. We are able to do this because not only do we sell these products on-line but all of our staff have experience of using most of the products when installing them into houses and businesses.

What geographical area do you cover?

We cover most of the South East. We can cover from Chichester in the west across to Eastbourne in the east and as far up as North London. We have been known to get enquiries and completed work as far North as Peterborough should the need arise.

Whatever the problem you have with your technology we have the staff, the knowledge, and the experience in house so that you only need make one call instead of several to solve whatever technology problem you are experiencing. If you are busy you ideally want to make one call and know that the person on the end of the phone not only understands your problem but also knows your business.
